Okay, this has taken a long time to get finished, but the first four ebook issues of The Far Reaches are up on Wowio.com for free! For those who are unfamiliar with Wowio, it is an ad supported ebook site. If you would like to know more about Wowio, how it works, and privacy issues, T Cambell of the webcomic Pennie and Aggie has a good article that explains things way better than I could. I’ve personally been signed up on Wowio since last fall and found all kinds of cool free ebooks including Dreamland Chronicles, Inverloch, and Earthsong. I personally gave a credit card number when I signed up, because like T Cambell says in his article, why would a company that doesn’t take your money be less trustworthy than one who does. I like how he sums up: “My own beliefs are that a writer of books on management and design doesn’t put his reputation on the line lightly, and that Verizon and Electronic Arts are not in the habit of tying their brands to scandals-in-the-making.”
Now there is a caveat to the whole Wowio thing, mainly that it only works if you’re in the US. So that means that all you international readers can’t sign up. However, don’t worry. I’m going to be putting up the ebooks on Lulu.com as digital downloads soon for probably 99 cents each. That will also be good for those of you who don’t want to sign up for Wowio. Another posibility would be Drive Thru Comics, though I don’t know whether they’d be interested. We’ll see. Expect to hear about it soon.
The ebooks have only been up on Wowio for three days and issue one is #8 in the top ten list of comics at the moment, which is pretty cool. I get 50 cents for each unique download on Wowio, and for those who are signed up there’s no reason not to try a book you’re not sure about since it’s free to them. And since I put a lot of effort into those covers I think that’ll help the number of downloads. At least I hope so. I’ve been working on Far Reaches for about two years, and so it would be nice to get a little something back for all my hard work.
And for you readers, I think having it in a higher resolution PDF format will be really cool and much easier to read than online. One nice feature of the ebooks, is that each page has it’s caption or title, as that was often part of the joke. Anyway, I’ll be putting up an actual ad link soon, and I’ll let you know when it’s available on Lulu.com for those of you who either can’t or would rather not sign up to Wowio.
