No GravatarSorry about not having a comic up today. I’ll try to have it done by Thursday night. I’ve just been having a crazy difficult time getting myself to sit down and focus on anything the last few days. I haven’t even been playing games or anything. I simply haven’t been able to get motivated. Sometimes that happens. I did finally manage to make myself sit down and do some reading, however. I found a book yesterday called Writing Comics with Peter David. It’s a bit superhero-centric, him being a veteran superhero writer (although he’s written for film, television, and novels.) Despite that, it was a fun read, and he brought out some good points that I think will help me with problems I’ve been having with Far Reaches. He has a nice simple way of putting things. It doesn’t really go particularly deep, but he’s good at illustrating his point. I especially enjoyed the part about the need for having opposite qualities in your main characters in order to create conflict. Each character should have an opposite in some way. It’s not like I haven’t heard it before, but the way he make his point left an impression on me. As soon as he illustrated what he was talking about, it made me realize how effective this it. For example, in Azumanga Daioh (my illustration not his), Tomo and Yomi are opposites in many ways, Sakaki and Kagura are opposites, etc. And these total opposite qualities and the friction that they create are what make them so funny together. Oh, well. I haven’t taken a creative writing class since high-school, so I’m just learning this as I go.
