I really wanted to hand paint the background on this one, but for consistency to the last two pages I decided to keep it 3d. I really like how Gilrec came out in the first panel. That expression is really an influence from Azumanga Daioh.
I wasn’t originally going to homage Jeeve’s famous pick-me-ups, but after writing myself into a corner I realized I had to. I had already used the spiked orange juice gag before the big speech. That was one of my favorite scenes from Right-Ho Jeeves, and I’m really happy with how Gilrec’s speech came out. But then I realized that Gilrec needed to have all his thrusters firing for the next scenes, thus Bentley gives him a miraculous hang-over cure (nod to Jeeves.) So there you have it. Gilrec is ready for anything, but is he ready for the full force of an angry Vellara?

One of the things I like about TFR is the occasional Jeeves-ism, the furturist twist on the classic master/servant dynamic. The pick-me-up is a necessary and honest device, and a rather nice nod to Wodehouse (as interpreted by Fry and Laurie). Good job, in other words. Keep it coming, I’m enjoying the story, and your art is great guns.
Thank you so much.
I really enjoy Jeeves and Wooster a lot, and it was something that lifted my spirits some time ago when they really needed lifting. I love both the books and the series with Fry and Laurie. So it just seemed natural to mix my love of sci-fi with my love of Wodehouse’s work.
While we’re talking about nods, was the “did i say or do anything that suggested I was sane” a nod to Terry Pratchett? I thought there was a line similar to that in Going Postal. Orrrr, you guys are both good sci-fi-ish comedy writers
Either way, love the comic, will be back for more.
Yes it was!
Wow, that’s cool you caught that, because it was kind of obscure. Going Postal is my favorite Pratchett book of all time. I’ve listened to the audiobook so many times I practically know it by heart.
I just read Going Postal a month or two ago and it completely slipped me by…
Do you mean you didn’t care for the book or you didn’t catch the reference?
References (obscure and otherwise) ftw!
I love the set-up for what’s coming with that last frame.
Yeah I love the last frame. I’ve been trying to improve my storytelling and layout.
Come to think of it, Vellara’s clawed pose makes her look kind of like a Left 4 Dead Witch.
Oh, I like all things Pratchett… I just didn’t catch the reference. razz:
I think you’d have to have read it a bunch of times to catch it. I just really liked the line.
