[Comic 254] Center of the Empire

No GravatarAnd we’re left hanging for a bit, and back with Gilrec and the infamous artifact. There was originally a lot more to this page, but I didn’t have time to do it all in one so I broke it into two and added the backstory to the Terran Empire and their first Emperor, Buford I the Smiter of Alien Interlopers. Just a lot of silliness this time around. As for Mr. Hohn and Nefarious, I’m still deciding exactly how I want to play that out. I have an idea but it needs scripting. Anyway, soon we’ll learn the secret of the artifact. Or will we?

    “Afflicted” rather than “inflicted”?

  2. Outlandish

I think you’re right! I’ll change that. That’s what I get for being in a hurry.

No, “afflicted” is correct. The object of “inflicted” is something unpleasant, e.g. “inflicted heavy losses on the enemy”, “a storm that inflicted widespread damage” (examples courtesy of dictionary.com). “Inflicted humans” would imply that humans are something unpleasant, and would also raise the question of who they’re inflicted on.

“Afflicted” means “to inflict some great injury or hurt upon, causing continued pain or mental distress; to trouble grievously; to torment.”

  4. Outlandish

Yup, you’re quite right. It should be fixed, though you may have to reload or delete your cache to see the change.

Sorry to add another one nitpick, but I’m pretty sure it should be abasement OF nature, not to nature. Abasing yourself to something means humbling or lowering yourself to them, abasing yourself before or to the throne. Here I think you meant on insult to or lowering of the natural learning process.

Of course, the literal molding of the minds got a chuckle of me.

  6. Outlandish

Oops again. Thanks for catching that one too. And I’m glad it at least got a little chuckle.

  7. TheDeepDark

What do you think all our gov’t subsidized edumacation does now, if not molding minds rather than teaching? ;)

  8. Outlandish

    Too true. Too true.

  9. Wyvern

My bad; I thought Russell was saying it *should* be “inflicted”. I didn’t realize that you’d already changed it.

  10. Outlandish

    No problem.
