[Comic 222] It’s all about the money

No GravatarI tried a doing more with the character rendering this time, being inspired by the beautiful art in Phoenix Requiem. It’s a bit dark, but then I felt that fit the scene. It makes Vellara a little more sinister. I realized just as I was finishing the page that I left out something rather important. But I can’t say. I’ll see if I can remedy it in the next page. At first I was going to have Vellara shouting, but I felt it was so much better to see her patronizing Gilrec and then lose it in the final panel.

Gilrec looks noticably different. Did you paint/model him differently? And the diamond on the necklace curves ocassionaly. I also find it funny that eyebrows appear on top of head hair, but I guess that is a comic convention. The fur does make it look like lightning is springing from the bad lady though. Missing red on the last lips?

Hi, thanks for your input. Yes, I did a lot different on this page. I’m experimenting with different reference pics and using 3d models as reference. Mainly I just wanted to see if I could play with some different poses and expressions. I’m not totally happy with Gilrec in this page and still need to mess with it. The eyebrows on top is a manga thing and the only reason I occasionally do it is because I kind of think it sometimes emphasizes the expression a little more. I didn’t spend much time rendering the fur so it could have looked better. I was more interested in shading the face on this one. The missing red lips on the last panel was intentional. I tried it various ways with the red, but didn’t like the look of it. So I just did without. I think it makes her look meaner in a way on that last panel.

TFR is really an experimental comic for me, so I’m always trying things differently, and drawing things differently. Sometimes I have to “cheat” on some things just so I can get the comic done and colored on time. That’s the biggest thing. But I do like to experiment. Again, thanks for all the input.

I know that the main axiom of this webcomic is “Gilrec is a wuss”, but is he going to be the hero the universe expects him to be? Or at least really stand up to Vellara?

  4. Outlandish

Oh he’ll have to face worse than Vellara. And he will shortly have to make a stand…alone. We’re coming to the critical climax of the chapter and a major turning point for Gilrec.

(I just should have got to this point 100 pages ago, but oh well. ) :???:

Hey, it’s okay. I miss Brin though – definitely my favored female character of the comic. Heh. I like how you get Vellara being the first to specifically suggest he was trying to get her to break the engagement. This could be rough…

  7. Outlandish

Definitely! All you Brin/Pix fans out there, I have the next part of their adventure blocked out it’s starting next chapter. I just don’t want to draw out this ending. It’s Gilrec’s moment of truth.

(Oh, and it’s gonna be rough…rough, but I’m hoping awesome. )

I actually think she looks a little like his uncle, Kilgore, in that last panel… which I think just adds to the awesome creepy/scary factor.

  10. Outlandish

That’s true. She’s definitely scarier in the last panel. I think the mouth looks more cruel.
