[Comic 205] Idiot Friends

No GravatarI’m not totally happy with the art in this page, and obviously it’s not in color yet. Yet I still managed to get it done, which considering how crazy my weekend and Monday have been, is saying a lot. I’m glad I stayed up to post this by Midnight. At least I toned it a bit. I really want to get Far Reaches done regularly, but I’ve started working on my second strip and so it’s going to take a bit to find the right balance. This page was hard to draw because I’ve just done five comic strips of my new comic I’m working on and I got used to a bit simpler characters. I really am enjoying the whole four panel strip and they’re looking good. So it took a bit to get back to the style for today’s comic. But the important thing is that it’s done. Technically, my schedule is Tuesday and Friday night for Far Reaches. I tried doing Monday/Wednesday last week, but it just blew up on me today so I’m back to the Tues/Fri. I know people are more used to Tues/Thurs, but I don’t know if I can manage that. Maybe I’ll give it a try.

hey, add some color and this will be good. i think it works great as a dialogue page. sometimes its good to keep it simple. keep up the good work

I’m gonna need to keep things simple if I want to continue on. I don’t know if I’ll have time to color it. We’ll see. Maybe simple coloring. But thanks for the encouragement. I appreciate it.

Hey, we can’t expect Everything now, can we? I appreciate that your still doing it, through all the complications, juggling your time with other concerns. I at least I’m grateful for the sacrifice.

Thanks so much. It’s good to know that there are those out there that really want to see the comic continue. It’s for you all that I’ll do my best to keep it going. Not that I don’t enjoy Far Reaches. But the fact that people want to see it continue makes me not want to scrap it and give up. I’ll do my best to keep it going twice a week.

I’m ok with however long it takes between pages, if I wasn’t then I wouldn’t be able to continue reading some of the comics I am reading.
Yes, I am very grateful for the effort you put out to continue brightening the lives of random strangers with your own personal brand of humor and storytelling. It’s been a fun jaunt so far and I am sure it will continue to be interesting.
Thank you so much for brightening my days.

Thank you so much! You’ve brightened mine too. I appreciate all you awesome readers who’ve stuck with Far Reaches despite my difficulty keeping it going. It makes it worthwhile.

The main reason I read The Far Reaches is because of the writing, not that I don’t enjoy the art, but I feel that the story, characters and dialogue are more than strong enough for me to continue reading even if you have to simplify the art a bit due to time constraints. Anyway thanks for the good times.

Thank you. And you’re very welcome too. It’s especially nice to know that my writing is appreciated. I was kind of thinking that it wasn’t very strong, so it’s good to read a comment like yours. I’ll try my best.

I’ve tried a fair few webcomics over the years I’ve been surfing and the majority of the ones I continue to read have a few things in common :

    1) The dialogue feels natural, if I were to read it aloud it wouldn’t coem across as stilted or awkward.
    2) The main cast are distinct characters with their own personalities and stay in character. Obviously doesn’t mean that the character can’t change or grow, simply that when it happens it feels right and part of the natural progression for that character.
    3) The plot hooks me, the hook will vary from comic to comic but I want to know what happens next.

The Far Reaches does all three in my opinion. The dialogue comes across as natural, I enjoy the different characters and it’s interesting to see Gilrec’s spine slowly starting to develop, also I’ve always been a sucker for ancient mysteries and cultures affecting “modern day” events not to mention Bentley’s shady past.

Though I have to say I’m glad to hear that you’re concerned about your writing because that means you’ll be trying to improve it and we the readers will gradually get the benefit. Confidence isn’t a bad thing but whenever someone ignores or believes themselves above criticism it always sets off warning bells to me.

Thank you so much! I appreciate that a lot. I really do try to do my best to constantly improve the writing, and I’m always studying and review all my creative writing books. There’s so much to learn and remember. I hope I can really make it something everyone will enjoy.
