[Comic 172] I hate the Lime ones

No GravatarOverall I like the graphics in this one, and I like the two cops. I didn’t really have time to perfect the dialog but I wanted to make sure to post this one on time. The police car was a model that I had already done some time ago and really the whole reason for getting the police involved was just so I could use it. I really like the design of it. I also thing the interior came out pretty good. I saw a workshop in ImagineFX that showed how to take a simple, untextured 3d render and turn it into a cool painting. Well, the original 3d had no textures, other than the shininess. But by rendering out a version of the image that simply uses a different color to mask off each material, I could use that to select areas in the final 3d render and add textures over the top in an overlay layer in Photoshop. It’s actually much faster to use the 3d as a basis and do all the fancy stuff in Photoshop, than to do it all in 3d. I think it came out looking pretty good too.

Incidentally, the cops were inspired by two things. First, the two security guards from The Tick cartoon. I loved those guys.  And second, every other strange guy I worked with when I actually worked as a security guard. A lot of them were very “interesting” people. No offense to any security guards out there <grin>.

I know a pretty interesting security guard and he just loves his soapbox.

Haha! I got the Tick reference immediately! Those guards are some great dead-pan comics. I remember when they finally released Tick Season 1 on DVD just last year. I bought it the very first time I saw it on the shelf. Man, now that is one cartoon I will never outgrow. Such a shame it got canned after only 3 brilliant seasons.

I know! I hope they release season three on DVD soon. I’ve got the first two. The dialog in that show was brilliant, and I loved the guards. They were perfect. I love how they’re having this conspiracy conversation over not being able to get the chips out of the vending machine. “World wide conspiracy. I’ve got evidence” etc. And all they have to say about the huge robot dog that flies in and steals something is: “Big dog…really big dog.” Totally dead-pan. And then they just go back to the chips like nothing happened. I’m not really big on super heroes, but that I think was the best super hero parody ever. There’s been plenty of parodies, but the Tick was just plain fun.
