No GravatarWell, this is two weeks in a row that the new schedule worked out, except that no one really knew what it was <grin>. Even so, it worked for me. I do apologize for it being so late in the day. I had wanted to finish it by morning, but I did actually say in the Twitter update that it would be in the evening. That’s kind of a bummer, of course, because I know most people like to read their comics early in the morning. I’ll try to get the next one done early so I can get ahead. Yet, I feel good about finally getting two full-sized pages done a week. I think simplifying the methods and limiting the number of panels has made a huge difference.

Lately, I’ve been on an old movie kick. Normally I’m more into the Muppet Show or cartoons (and a few anime), but recently my sister has got me hooked on the old Charlie Chan movies from the 30’s. In particular I really like the ones with Warner Oland. They were made at a time in Hollywood when it was considered normal for a non-asian to play an asian role, and in the case of Sydney Toler (the 2nd Charlie Chan) it’s pretty awful. Things were very different then. Yet, even though Warner Oland isn’t really Chinese, I really enjoyed his portrayal of the character. He’s humble, cunning, and has a great jovial/fun quality about him. They’re a lot of fun if you’re into old movies.

The other old detective movies I really love are the Thin Man movies with William Powell and Myrna Loy. They’re kind of boozers, but the movies are good mysteries with really snappy dialog. My mom and sister have a huge collection of old movies, and they’re the ones that finally got me interested in PG Wodehouse. We also recently watched Monkey Business with Cary Grant and Marilyn Monroe. Interestingly, Marilyn’s character was just a supporting role but she’s all over the cover. I think it’s ironic Cary Grant had such a huge and long and amazing career, but few people I know even have heard of him. Yet even all the teens I know have heard of Marilyn Monroe, even though they’ve may never have seen a black and white movie. Funny how that sort of thing works out. Anyway, I think I’ll go watch another Charlie Chan.
