[Comic 166] Make ‘em Pay!

No GravatarOriginally this and page 167 were part of one eight panel page and the panels were small, and I was going to do them as two mini-strips. But then I thought how much better it would be to do them each full size with bigger, nicer panels. I like how it came out. And actually, I bought the second volume of Inverlock and what I like it that her pages are full-sized but since she limits the number of panels, they’re faster to produce. Using her pages for layout ideas and keeping it simple, I should be able to do more full-sized pages, with more dialog in less time. More full-sized pages also means more Wowio books, more often. She was able to do over 700 pages in around four years. I should have at least 300 pages now, but since each page was so complex and time-consuming I only was getting one page done a week. Now that I’m simplifying I should be able to put out three a week (at least that’s the goal to work at) and the story should move ahead better. I’ll also be experimenting with more 2d backgrounds when I think it’ll be faster. For instance, modeling and texturing the interior of the Calantha’s cockpit would look great, but it would take at least a full day. This cockpit, which I ended up blurring anyway, took much less time to do. And it’s a separate, large and wide shot so it can be reused as necessary.

Inverloch uses all cel shading for the most part, with painted backgrounds, not to say that makes it a lot easier, but she doesn’t have to worry about 3d modeling. : ) Still, she’s crazy awesome when it comes to getting pages out (her real secret is having a buffer, hint hint to all you webcomic people out there). Also, I like the motion blur effect on the last panel. Not sure about where the sound effect is though.

but if you’re going to incorperate ideas from Inverloch into your layout more power to you. Full size pages are always nice.

“but she doesn’t have to worry about 3d modeling”
True, and she doesn’t have to worry about lots of spaceships racing through traffic in a crowded city or things like that. Even if I were drawing everything that would be a huge pain. In fact it would be a bigger pain, which is why I use the 3d. I hate inking vehicles. It would also be way easier if I limited myself to fewer locations and vehicles. These things take time to set up and render. But then if I kept it too simple I’d get bored with it. I’ve been looking forward to doing this action sequence.

But she does an awesome job painting backgrounds, though. Much better than I can do, even in her early work. I need to learn to do better in that regard. Kazu Kabuishi also does an amazing job in Flight and Amulet. The color and mood are beautiful. Some things are easier to do in 3d, but others are way, way harder. So I need to work on my painting skills.

“Still, she’s crazy awesome when it comes to getting pages out (her real secret is having a buffer, hint hint to all you webcomic people out there).”

No kidding, she’s amazing. She’s like a machine or something. I’m working on having a buffer, though. That would make a big difference, so it’s a big goal. And full pages are nice. Besides, the more full pages I do the more often I can put out books on Wowio, and the more we can get the story going.

And yeah, maybe that sound effect should be moved. I kind of just through it in.

  3. Outlandish

Fixed the sound effect in last panel. It’s a little better now.

It’s been awhile…I like chases, and dogfights.
    This is AWESOME!!
Thank you very much, you rule!

Oh, spelling… in Panel 1 where Riffy says
“Does this look like a warship to you? The Calantha is BUILD for speed, not Combat!”
(The italicized word should be “BUILT”, not “BUILD”.)

Anyways, good luck with the next comic, I can’t wait!
Oh, and try not to get sick…like me.
    >.<

Oops! I’ll fix that little spelling error. I hate ones that spell check can’t spot.

I like chases too. I’ve been looking forward to doing this one as it’s such a challenge and I love doing FX shots. (Any excuse to make things blow up  )

  6. Outlandish

    Fixed the “build” “built” mistake.

I noticed the spelling error too, but didn’t think to mention it, I use metal tweaking to correct those kinds of errors and then forget about them :P .
And Yes, the sound effect looks better now, it’s coming from the ship as a whole, not just out of one engine/side and isn’t sliding out of the frame

I know, those are the spelling errors that get me every time. And thanks for mentioning the sound effect in the first place. I’m glad I changed it. It’s definitely much better.
